Inmate testimony - USA

Hi, my name is John and I would like to tell you a little about myself. At the age of 5 my parents got divorced and my mum found another man who would soon become my Step Father. Growing up I can remember always trying to fit in and I felt that no matter what I did or who I hung around I just didn't belong. I started to feel like an outcast.

Growing up we went to church but my parents were never consistent in attendance. We would go to church on Mothers Day, Fathers Day and Christmas, and every so often throughout the year. I grew up going to public schools and I was very active in sports. I played in the orchestra, band and sang in choir. At the age of 15 I was heading to school for a basketball game where I was going to make one choice that would change my life.

I became addicted to methamphetamines and it wasn't long before I started to find new ways to get high. At the age of 18 I was kicked out of my parent’s house. Not long after this I was admitted into the Emergency room at hospital for overdosing. My parents were waiting for the phone call they dreaded. I already gave up on sports, dropped out of school and was spending every dollar I had on the drug. I wasn't able to hold a job for more than a few months. I was living out of my car and going from house to house. At the age of 21 I moved into an apartment which didn't last for more then a few months. I had no place to go. I lost my job and was stealing just to maintain my drug addiction. Before I knew it the Police caught up with the crimes I was committing and I was charged and sent to jail.

I was tired of living a life of drugs. It seemed everything I did only made things worse. My family gave up and said this is where you need to be and for the first time I really did feel this is where I needed to be. My Aunt who is born again and knows Christ as her Savior sent me an ‘Unshackled’ comic book. I read through the story and it hit home. I knew I needed to change and after reading the comic I realized that if Jesus can change this man’s life then he certainly can change my life. I wanted to know how. I grew up hearing stories about how Jesus died on the cross for our sins, I knew about Noah's ark, Jonah and the whale. I never took what I heard seriously until that moment. I knew I was in need of Jesus Christ. I didn't know how to pray so I talked to God like I am talking to you now. On April the 8th 2005 I received Jesus Christ’s gift of Salvation. I can't explain what happened but I know that as soon as I said that prayer that my life would be different and I had a reason to live. I had a purpose and I felt like I belonged.

Today I am actively involved in ‘Reformers Unanimous’ also known as R.U. I was first introduced to R.U. through the Jail Ministry. I attend every week and have become a member of our Church. God has delivered me from a 7 year drug addiction. God has taken care of my every need and has blessed me financially, spiritually and today I have no criminal record. God is good and I praise him for what he has done and the greatest blessing of all is that today I know without a doubt that if I were to die today that I know where I am going. Do you know Jesus Christ’s free gift?

In Christ,

John Flieger
